Pastoral Care Activities

Rev Dan is a man who possesses many skills and has a dedication to serve others. He’s been described as kind, calm, and helpful. His definition of pastoral care is founded in listening, trust and relationship. It is more than a service provided, especially for those without spiritual care and for those who have found themselves excluded from religious community. It is the profound honour of being able to enter into the story of another to provide support that is safe, evidence-based, confidential, and faith sensitive.

Over the past 20 years he has provided pastoral care both inside and outside of his church community guiding hundreds of couples with excellent premarital, wedding, and marriage care, giving support for those dealing with sickness, hospital visitation, senior care, bereavement, death and loss, divorce care, conflict resolution and mediation, family systems, career advice and transitioning, finance and stewardship.

Study groups and fellowship

Rev Dan currently leads an online Bible Study which began in the pandemic and has continued as a dynamic education tool to this day. He is also a part of a study group which is studying religious deconstruction and how to care through ritual and service to those in the midst of their faith journey. Dan became a trained facilitator for the Kairos Blanket Exercise that builds understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada by walking through pre-contact, treaty-making, colonization and resistance. He has facilitated the Blanket Exercise in various settings and among diverse learners.

It’s not always work and no play for Dan

Hockey – He currently coaches and referees women’s recreational hockey (ages 30-70) with a focus on new player development. Dan finds incredible joy in being a part of new learning, seeing these remarkable individuals overcome obstacles, and witnessing the freedom and friendship that the ice provides.

Disc Golf – Some people need a little extra motivation to go into the wilderness. That would describe Dan. He enjoys playing a little fetch in order to wander through the woods. Disc golf provides a great social opportunity to laugh and talk with new friends without the high costs and skill barriers that other sports provide.

Music – Dan loves making music with others whether playing guitar around the campfire, choral singing or leading services of worship.

Rev Dan’s closing words

“There is a story in Luke’s gospel that many are familiar with about the prodigal son. Often, we are asked to find our place within the story as one of its characters. Perhaps we are the prodigal son himself. Sometimes we are the father waiting and worrying about our children. We can even identify with the elder son who has been good and faithful and wondering about the fairness of life. There is one other character in the story that I have always identified with the most: the servant sent to prepare the meal for when this family comes together in forgiveness and reconciliation. My hope is always to be a helpful servant to those seeking beauty, family, community and wholeness.”
