As of July 2018 I am employed as a chaplain in Peterborough Ontario at the Canadian Health Recovery Center, a private adult men’s only addiction treatment centre. I am a primary addictions counsellor and spiritual care provider. I previously worked at Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury as a full time chaplain from October 2015 until July 2018.
My 37.5 hours a week are fully pastoral counselling, 30 hours direct pastoral care and 7.5 hours for administrative duties and planning.
At Health Sciences North hospital in Sudbury I provide spiritual and religious counselling (one to one, family and groups) to all 5 psychiatric units, the palliative ward and the oncology (cancer) medical unit. My day consists of providing pastoral care to patients, their family, loved ones and friends as well as to staff at the hospital.
In addition to my full-time work as a chaplain, I am a regular ministerial pulpit supply preacher for St James Church, Sudbury, St Andrews Church, Sudbury and Capreol Church, Capreol.
In the past 3 years, I have also taught a spiritual meditation course at St Andrews Church, Sudbury – this course was every Wednesday for 4 weeks and was taught twice a year, Lent and Advent.
In addition to the above, I was a community resource to several clergy whom I would accompany when they were visiting a parishioner who was inquiring about Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). I was on the HSN MAiD response team.
Later after a beautiful religious wedding ceremony, we had a baptism done in our home by Reverend Iain Buchanan. It was a beautiful ceremony and he did a wonderful job in personalizing it to our needs and beliefs. Such a personal touch to have it done in our home surrounded by our loving families. We will definitely go with Iain again for the baptism of our future children!!!!! – Melinda & Matthew
